RE:     "The Church Needs Art"

Dear Friend:

Religious Art - Sacred ArtIt is Beauty that ministers to our hearts. When your world is chaotic and stressing, beauty can lift you up, inspire you and energize you. Beauty can penetrate into the depths of your spirit, and so much more if it is the transcendental Beauty of God.

Hi, my name is Juan Carcache.

I have been an artist for over thirty years and for most of those years I've struggled with the sad reality that most fine art goes practically unseen. I've visited museums throughout the world and have always wondered just how many people get to enjoy the masterpieces. It seems that the patrons are always the same. When I traveled and did outdoor shows, I met hundreds of the most skillful artists in the country, but only a few got a bit of exposure when they were lucky enough to be featured in a newspaper article or in a magazine.

Almost from the beginning of my art career, I decided to become a printmaker to ensure that a larger audience could enjoy the artwork. Printmaking enabled me to spend more time on each piece and allowed collectors to have access to a greater choice of images at more moderate prices.

"You have eyes but don't see and have ears but don't hear"

Sacred ArtThe secular world has invaded our homes, not only through television and computers, but through our very lifestyles. I recently watched a program where an ex-cult member said that he could walk into any house in the U. S. and fill an entire cardboard box with objects in the house that have occult symbolism; things that we buy without even knowing.

It is time to re-evaluate the sacred. To give it its place of preeminence in our homes.

The old Jewish people, with their rich tradition and symbolism, were instructed to tell stories to their children during feast days about the wonders that God had done for them. Most of us have lost that sense of responsibility and we just hope that our children "pick up" the faith from Sunday School, or from television, or from a few bible story books we may have bought them.

Quiz your children or grandchildren about basic bible stories. You may be as shocked as I was recently when I asked an 11 year old girl who Adam and Eve were. She had heard the story, but could not tell me much about them. Another little girl made an attempt to answer the same question, but she thought their names were "Even and Odd." At least that meant she had learned something somewhere.

"Set me like a seal on your heart, like seal on your arm"

Sacred Art ItalyGod wanted his people to remember Him constantly so that they could "Love the Lord Your God with all your heart...". He instructed the Israelites to make phylacteries in order to wear that law on their arms and on their foreheads. Later, through Joel He foretold, "I will write my law in your hearts."

Set Me As A Seal On Your HeartGod also instructed Moses not to make 'graven images' to worship, not only to prevent idolatry, but also because God was waiting for the 'fullness of time' when He could reveal Himself in Christ.

Genesis says of Adam: "In the image of God He created him." Jesus, the second Adam, declared: "He who has seen Me has seen the Father." Jesus is the epiphany of God, the incarnate Word, God's begotten masterpiece!

"Christ is the IMAGE of the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature." Sacred art begins with Christ, and all of sacred history points to Him. All of the images in this year's Sacred Art Print Of The Month Collection are about Christ's Life.

Let's set God as a seal on our hearts by remembering Him often. Sacred Art serves the same purpose that the phylacteries of old did: they keep us in remembrance.

Sacred Art Reveals & Makes Tangible The Spirit World

There was a child in the town where we used to live who served as an altar boy. My wife and I were always amazed to see him come into chapel after serving at mass, kneel on the cold floor, and get lost in prayer. One day, my wife complemented the parents on the child's spirituality and the father told her this story: "One night, as were putting him to bed, I gave him a cross I had bought him as a present and I was getting ready to hang it on the wall behind his bed. He stopped me and said, 'Dad, don't hang it behind me, hang it on the wall in front of me, so it will be the first thing I see when I wake up in the morning.'"

That story so impressed us, that when we moved from that town we decided not to hang the big plasma TV on the wall in front of our bed, but to follow the child's lead ... We hung the biggest cross we had on that wall and it has been unspeakably rewarding for me to wake up often before daybreak and see my wife already kneeling before that cross.

Here's What Church Leaders Have To Say About Sacred Art ...

Pope BENEDICT XVI: Address to Artists November 21, 2009

Religious Art - Descent from the crossThe present time is marked ... by a weakening of hope, by a certain lack of confidence in human relationships, which gives rise to increasing signs of resignation, aggression and despair... What is capable of restoring enthusiasm and confidence, what can encourage the human spirit to rediscover its path, to raise its eyes to the horizon, to dream of a life worthy of its vocation -- if not beauty? ...

Indeed, an essential function of genuine beauty, as emphasized by Plato, is that it gives man a healthy "shock," it draws him out of himself, wrenches him away from resignation and from being content with the humdrum -- it even makes him suffer, piercing him like a dart, but in so doing it "reawakens" him, opening afresh the eyes of his heart and mind, giving him wings, carrying him aloft. Dostoevsky's words that I am about to quote are bold and paradoxical, but they invite reflection. He says this: "Man can live without science, he can live without bread, but without beauty he could no longer live, because there would no longer be anything to do to the world. The whole secret is here, the whole of history is here."

Sacred Art - Vatican CeilingPope John Paul II: Letter to Artists, 1999

In order to communicate the message entrusted to her by Christ, the Church needs art. Art must make perceptible, and as far as possible attractive, the world of the spirit, of the invisible, of God. It must therefore translate into meaningful terms that which is in itself ineffable. Art has a unique capacity to take one or other facet of the message and translate it into colours, shapes and sounds which nourish the intuition of those who look or listen. It does so without emptying the message itself of its transcendent value and its aura of mystery.

Pope Paul VI: Address to Artists, May 7, 1964

Religious ArtWe need you. We need your collaboration in order to carry out our ministry, which consists, as you know, in preaching and rendering accessible and comprehensible to the minds and hearts of our people the things of the spirit, the invisible, the ineffable, the things of God himself. And in this activity ... you are masters. It is your task, your mission, and your art consists in grasping treasures from the heavenly realm of the spirit and clothing them in words, colours, forms -- making them accessible. And if we were deprived of your assistance, our ministry would become faltering and uncertain, and a special effort would be needed, one might say, to make it artistic, even prophetic. In order to scale the heights of lyrical expression of intuitive beauty, priesthood would have to coincide with art.

Sacred Art - Doors Of ParadisePope Pius XII: Address to Artists, 1952

The function of all art lies in fact in breaking through the narrow and tortuous enclosure of the finite, in which man is immerged while living here below, and in providing a window to the infinite for his hungry soul.

In truth, artistic masterpieces were known as the "Bible of the people," to mention such noted examples as the windows of Chartres, the door of Ghiberti (by happy expression known as the Door of Paradise), the Roman and Ravenna mosaics and the facade of the Cathedral of Orvieto. These and other masterpieces not only translate into easy reading and universal language the Christian truths, they also communicate the intimate sense and emotion of these truths with an effectiveness, lyricism and ardor that, perhaps, is not contained in even the most fervent preaching.

Second Vatican Council: Closing Remarks, December 8, 1965

We now address you, artists, who are taken up with beauty and work for it: poets and literary men, painters, sculptors, architects, musicians, men devoted to the theater and the cinema. To all of you, the Church of the council declares to you through our voice: if you are friends of genuine art, you are our friends.

Sacred ArtThe Church has long since joined in alliance with you. You have built and adorned her temples, celebrated her dogmas, enriched her liturgy You have aided her in translating her divine message in the language of forms and figures, making the invisible world palpable. Today, as yesterday, the Church needs you and turns to you. She tells you through our voice: Do not allow an alliance as fruitful as this to be broken. Do not refuse to put your talents at the service of divine truth. Do not close your mind to the breath of the Holy Spirit.

This world in which we live needs beauty in order not to sink into despair. It is beauty, like truth, which brings joy to the heart of man and is that precious fruit which resists the year and tear of time, which unites generations and makes them share things in admiration. And all of this is through your hands. May these hands be pure and disinterested. Remember that you are the guardians of beauty in the world. May that suffice to free you from tastes which are passing and have no genuine value, to free you from the search after strange or unbecoming expressions. Be always and everywhere worthy of your ideals and you will be worthy of the Church which, by our voice, addresses to you today her message of friendship, salvation, grace and benediction.

Answering The Call

Juan J Carcache - Sacred ArtistAfter a few pilgrimages to sacred places in America and Europe, I began to feel the call to dedicated my life to sacred art. I spent almost a year praying and discerning the call. I discovered not only Christ calling, but also the Church itself, as quoted on the excerpts above.

Years ago, a visiting minister, who interestingly enough was deaf in the natural but not in the spiritual, prophesied the calling, and added that when I found myself walking in the shoes of obedience my whole life would be re-directed. That has come to pass!

A verse kept ringing in my ears throughout my period of discernment, "Every scribe which is instructed in the kingdom of heaven is like a man that is a householder, who brings forth out of his treasure THINGS NEW AND OLD." At that time, I was still working in my secular profession and was going regularly to a commercial site under construction to do inspections of the underground work. Another verse soon started coming to mind, "I have sent you to reap that in which you did not labor: others have labored, and you have entered into their labors." At night, I would have dreams and in my dreams I would see building foundations like the ones I was going to inspect; I would also had the feeling that I was the one who had to build on those foundations. The words of Paul also came to mind, "I, as a wise masterbuilder, have built the foundation and another builds thereon."

Little by little, things became clearer. One night I saw myself among a group of artists from the past. They were all artists/illustrators who had dedicate much of their lives to Sacred Art. One after another seemed to come to me and ask me to build upon their foundations.

I started studying sacred art, particularly illumination and illustrations and was grieved to find masterpieces of Sacred Art that have been as lost or forgotten as the Arc of the Covenant or the Holy Grail. Many recent artists like William Kurelek, Rien Poortvliet, or Sergio Cariello have develop wonderful new images in Sacred Art, but that was not my call. I was to build on foundations that had already been laid; I was to re-interpret and translate into modern language the great Sacred Art Images of old.

May the Good God minister to you through these sacred images, and may you also minister to Him through them!

Little Flowers Of St FrancisThe Little Flowers Of St Francis

This is one of the best known books on St Francis of Assisi. 'Fioretti,' or 'Little Flowers' as translated, are short annecdotes of miracles and devout examples of the humble life of Saint Francis of Assisi and some of his companions.

Since the times of the apostles, the world had not known a group of men walk in holiness as Francis of Assisi and his companions.

Notable PrayersNotable Prayers:

History is rich in models of remarkable prayers. It has prayers of submission as well as prayers that have wings and seem to mount into the sunlight of God. There are prayers that are the result of an 'open vision' and prayers that make the crush sould cry out, 'Thy will be done!'

The clearest picture of the joy and peace of a soul can only be found in its prayers.

Seven Angels Of The RenaissanceSeven Angels of the 'Renascence:'

The art world during the Renaissance (Renascence: IT renascere = 'to be reborn' -- Renaissance: FR) was completely transformed by the new approach to art. This is the story of that re-awakening.

The second part of the book is a portrayal of some of the best know artists of the Renaissance, such as Leonardo Da Vinci, Michaelangelo, Titian, Raphael, Correggio, and the Carraci (no relationship to me, I don't think).
